I had to quickly stop thinking about all of my junk because there's WAY too much and my head was about to explode. So I focused on the kitchen at home. I decided I should go through all my freezer, fridge, drawers, and hiding places and figure out just how much food we really have. This is a really good idea to do at least once a year. You find stuff you forgot you had, you can get rid of old stuff no one's ever gonna eat, and you can save some money.
The money part is really why I did this! I love saving money! If I know exactly what I have, I can base my menu on that and spend next to no money on groceries!
Some interesting things that I discovered:
- I had WAY more hamburger meat in the freezer than I thought. (I like to buy it when it's on sale- but I think I got carried away)
- I was almost out of chicken! (Don't worry I just picked up more at Cash and Carry 40 lbs for $19.97 and I'm splitting the case so only $10 for 20 lbs of Chicken!)
- I need to make banana bread soon or start tossing the bananas. Seriously I have a million...
- I have a lot of duplicate spices. Especially the ones that I never use. (Probably because I didn't do this before so I assumed I didn't have a spice and bought more)
All in All- A very successful project!
Hi Bethany,
ReplyDeleteI know this is one of your older posts but I had to chime in here and say I get where your coming from and why you did this :) I try to inventory every month - 6 weeks. Not just food, but pots, pans, appliances that haven't been used in a while. If I dont think it will be soon then I toss it or donate it. I have a full house and this routine is key to keeping on top of things.
Thanks for coming around my blogs (La Vida Cheapo and The Coupon Posse') and following. Following you now:) The Coupon Posse has some awesome give-aways lined up so keep an eye on us :)
